Welcome to GlobalSeaweed-PROTECT
GlobalSeaweed-PROTECT is working to improve livelihoods for the long-term for seaweed farming communities in Southeast Asia by building a productive seaweed industry that is resilient to climate change, is biosecure and protects wild seaweed diversity.

About the Project
GlobalSeaweed-PROTECT is a three-year programme (February 2025-February 2028) funded by the UKRI Biotechnology and biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) under the Sustainable and Resilient Aquaculture Systems in Southeast Asia programme.

Our Team
The GlobalSeaweed-PROTECT programme brings together an international team of experts in science, policy and socio-economics from
partner institutions in the UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand
and Vietnam.
It builds upon our work from our UKRI-funded GlobalSeaweedSTAR
programme (2017-2022) and Defra Global Centre for Biodiversity and Climate
(GCBC)-funded Innovative Seaweed Aquaculture I & II and GlobalSeaweed-SUPERSTAR
programmes (2022-2026).

Our Challenge
It is well-established that seaweeds and their habitats are essential for marine ecosystems to function. They contribute a wide range of ecosystem services and support millions of people around the world.
Despite this, conservation designations and management to protect these vital resources are non-existent or inadequate.
Southeast Asia is one of the largest seaweed producing region in the world.
